Out of the box this metric shows you the number of tickets that have yet to be moved to a 'done' status. This allows the creation of a vast amount of different perspectives, via breakdowns and filters.

For example, you can keep a close track of your priority bugs and hopefully see this 'bug backlog' reduce over time:

If you want to track different Statuses over time then rather than Unresolved Tickets, a better choice is Ticket/Story Points Flow.
